1. Key points

Acute hemorrhagic edema of young children is a skin limited small vessel leukocytoclastic vasculitis. The diagnosis is made on a clinical basis in subjects with following characteristics:
  • Age ≤24 months
  • Skin eruptions
  • Lesions: violent onset of a) purpuric or ecchymotic target-like lesions and b) often tender non pitting edema
  • Localization: cheeks, ears and extremities (with relative sparing of the trunk)
  • Not-ill-appearing
  • Prognosis: the disease spontaneously recovers in 1-2 weeks
