5. Treatment

  • Since it is a self-limited benign disease, no treatment is required.
  • Supportive care and reassurance* are advised.
  • Children with fever or tender skin lesions are prescribed paracetamol or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agent such as ibuprofen.
 
Furthermore
  • In many cases, antimicrobials are initially given, but are discontinued after obtaining negative culture results.
  • Systemic steroids or antihistamines are often prescribed but do not alter the disease course.
 
 
* Many cases benefit from a 2–3-day admission and, subsequently, from regularly scheduled physician appointments.
